Chickens we love Chickens

Here are two activities that students at Sargent Park School did

Chicken Games

This is an activity the grade 2's at Sargent Park did in Collaboration with an elementary school in Jacksonville, Florida using the book "Big Chickens" by Leslie Helakjoski. In gym the children were taught a variety of games using a rubber chicken.

Hatching our Chickens

The Kindergarten students at Sargent Park School in Winnipeg, Manitoba hatched chicken eggs in their classroom. This video shows the story of their journey in learning about chicken egg hatching. We are contributing to the Big Chicken project in collaboration with a school in Jacksonville, Florida.

Sargent Park students,
I LOVE your videos! My favorite game was Chicken Hoopscotch. How fun is that?!? I like how you all looked like chickens too. :)

It looked like the kindergarteners learned so much about chickens. I have hatched chickens in my classroom too and think it is a magical experience you will never forget. Now you have a video to look back on too! Great work!

Love,
Mrs. Holtsman

I am so impressed with the work you accomplished. I loved the video! You could really see how the "Big Chickens" project was integrated across the curriculum, art, writing, math, science... I especially liked the poems! Your work reminded me of the summers I spent working my uncle's farm in Nova Scotia. What great memories I have of that time. Thanks for sharing and giving us ideas to use in our own classrooms. Keep up the great work, kindergarteners!

I used to think that our books-of-the-month were limited to Language Arts teachers. How would math and Science and Resource teachers respond to the books. Yor videos show that many different teachers can use the books from the PE teacher to adapt games to the Scince teacher to teach about life cycles.

I loves your videos. I especially liked your chicken masks. My favorite game was Duck Duck Chicken! I also loved the life cycle ideo because children that don't have the opportunity to hatch eggs in their clasroom get to see how it's done! Thanks for sharing!

I loves your games, especially your chicken masks. The video is a wonderful way to show children that don't have the opportunity to hatch eggs in their class the way it is done. Thank you so much for sharing!

This video of the kindergarteners experiencing chickens hatching is absolutely amazing! I loved hearing them tell their story. As a teacher, I couldn't help noticing all of integrated skills that were being learned:
Senses-peeping sounds; soft fur Vocabulary-heat lamp; incubator
Sequencing-"In two days..."
Math-"3 more chickens...";bar graph
Calendar-hatching calendar countdown
Art-created playdough chickens; painting chickens
Life Lesson-"One died..."
Health-washing hands
What an incredible and interesting experience! This is learning in its purist form! Thank you for sharing.

I am a big fan of integrated learning and how you had your students respond to the book Big Chickens is a perfect example of this type of teaching. The Physical Education chicken games were a hoot to watch, and it is so obvious that the children really enjoyed the activities. I think our school is learning from you!

How I wish I was a kindergartner in your class. I loved watching the first video "Chicken Games". My favorite game was "Clean the Coop". What fun everyone seemed to be having!

The second video "Hatching Chickens" was a brillant example of integration of multiple contents. In fact, I am sure that this experience will be one that these young and precious students will never forget. Bravo and thank you so much for sharing your work with us. Sargent Park students and teachers are awesome!

With admiration,
Mrs. Chant
